How To Plant Asparagus For A Current Year Harvest

Asparagus usually has a 3 year waiting period before harvesting. That’s a long time to wait for a vegetable. Change the way you plant your asparagus and you can have a crop the same year you plant it.
It is recommended that asparagus be planted 12 inches deep in the garden soil,, then wait 3 seasons to harvest. But if you plant asparagus half that deep, you can eat it this growing season.
Set the asparagus crowns at a depth of 5-6 inches when planting. The asparagus will be ready to harvest and enjoy this garden season.
If you are in doubt, plant asparagus both ways and see how it works for you.
